I decided to post some Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory’s screenshots here to show new people how the gameplay looks before they start it. Hope you’ll be enjoying it.
I think that posting a couple of screenshots from the original game can make a good first view and give some informations about the game, even if you do not have played it yet (if so, then it’s a shame, you have to! :)). I posted a wolfenstein enemy territory logo, enemy territory menu (options, logo etc on the screen), wolf et normal front view with the gun, wolfenstein allies in group and finally another one front view in the air with the gun.
I think that it looks pretty good but you’ve got my advice – just try it!

I have played Enemy Territory for few years, I was playing also Counter Strike for few times. You can say I am not experienced in CS. Yes, that’s true, but it doesn’t make any difference. Wolf:ET and CS are, hmm, games from similar times, but they are completely different for me. Like I wrote playing in ET took much of my time and playing in CS haven’t. I know many reasons why is that and it’s not because I like ET more than CS. ET’s just better.

Why does Enemy Territory is better than Counter-Strike. I can find multiple reasons why it’s that.

- ET has better graphic. It’s better for online multiplayer playing, just faster and you do not have to download that much of graphic files.

- ET is more enjoyable.

- People playing ET are more experienced, I mean they are usually older and you do not have to play with silly kids.

- You can chat easily and find new friends. For example I met few people in ET also in real world. Really interesting people.

- The Second World War. Allies vs Axis. What could beat that story? Simple nothing.

- ET is faster, maybe it’s not so realistic (I mean it could be, but it depends of server configuration), but makes much fun and adds much adrenaline (btw, there’s adrenaline in game, too!)

- ET has amazing, just awesome maps. So simple, so different and so good.

- Weapons. Nothing could beat ET guns. FG42, Thompson, MP40, Panzerfaust, K43, Sten, Colt1911. Just pwns.

- No kids, no nubs. On mostly servers.

- So different gamemodes. It can be so realistic, just like in Second World War, and it can be as much fun as it gives – double jumps, panzerwar, riflewar, knifewar etc. Owned.

There’s so much I can write here, I will try to add more of it ofcourse, as soon as possible. Thanks for reading.

What is Punkbuster?
——————-
Shortly, PunkBuster is a program to prevent cheating in online games published by Even Balance, Inc. W:ET uses it.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

How to get PB (PunkBuster) operate without problems in Windows operating systems. Game W:ET. (I will run through how I did things, I’ve never had any problems with pb)

1. ReInstall Windows. (Highly recommended)

If you do not necessarily want to ReInstall Windows, then skip part 1 (Note. Then also in paragraph 2 a few things will then intervene). If you ReInstall Windows, be sure to download the necessary programs / other things before reinstallation:

-Drivers: Graphic card + Motherboard
-Security: Firewall as ZoneAlarm Basic and antivirus as Avira Antivir Personal (both free)
-Other necessary Programs: Browser eg Firefox, xfire, msnmessenger, sl.gamelauncher (if using) and ET + patchs (2.60 and 2.60b) and the version changer (2.55, 2.56, 2.60 and 2.60b), for example ETvCh_v05.

Once the necessary softwares + other programs have been downloaded, disconnect your computer from internet, for example, by unplugging the ethernet cable. Turn off the modem / router. Remember to save your downloaded programs and other important things like photographs, bookmarks etc. either in memory stick or on a CD / DVD.

2. Make the following steps in this order once you have installed Windows (Note: If your computer asks you to restart your computer now, it is strongly recommended that you restart the computer then):

Install the motherboard drivers. Then install your graphic card drivers.

Install Avira and Zone Alarm. (Remember to turn your Windows Firewall off once ZoneAlarm has been installed)

After those install, for example, firefox, xfire, msnmessenger, sl.gamelauncher…

Finally, install ET. Once ET is installed, install patch 2.60. After that 2.60b (Make sure that you install 2.60b correct). Now install the version changer. You can then launch ET.exe and for example set ur resolution, internet speed and in-game name. Also remember to enable the PB: Online -> bottom right is a box: “Enable Punk Buster.” Press it. Quit ET.

Note. If you are using Windows Vista, be sure to run all the programs as administrator. Right mouse button -> then select “run as administrator”.

Note. ZoneAlarm probably inquires about permission to allow programs when you start them / when you connect to internet. When this happens, check the box “Remember this setting”. Then press Allow.

Even before you turn on your computer network, set the ZoneAlarm settings as follows:

-Firewall-> Main: Internet Zone Security: medium. Trusted Zone Security: medium.
-Program Control-> Main: Program Control: medium. Automatic Lock: off.

-Program Control-> Programs: Here you see a list of programs. Although the list doesn’t have many programs yet, there will be more when you connect your computer to internet and use programs. From this list it is important to allow completely (ie, put the Allow (ie, green Nike mark), all four of the horizontal points, under the heading: Access: Trusted and Internet. Server: Trusted and Internet) the following programs:

-Antivirus Control Center
-Antivirus Scheduler
-Antivirus System Tray Tool
-Antivirus Updater
-Check Point Updating Client (ZoneAlarm thing)
-ET.exe
-ETDED.exe
-ETvCH.exe (Version Changer)
-Notification Tool (Avira thing)
-pbweb.exe
-PnkBstrA.exe
-PnkBstrB.exe
-sl.gamelauncher
-any other programs like xfire, msnmessenger, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, Skype, etc.

Now you can plug-in the ethernet cable and start the modem / router.

Now go to a server that has PB enabled, play a map or two and quit ET. Now PunkBuster should autoupdate itself to the latest version while you’re playing. If for some reason this doesn’t happen and PB kicks you out from server for having an outdated version of pb, update it manually with pbweb.exe (unless it isn’t in your pb folder, go to www.evenbalance.com and look for a instructions how to manually update PB) Now everything _should_ work perfectly, if PB still keeps kicking you out of ther server, then go to www.google.com and type in the exact reason why pb keeps kicking you and add “pb” or “punkbuster”. (I.e “Corrupted packet flow punkbuster”) Browse through about 10-20 results Google gives you. If you can’t find a solution, your situation is just bad. Then just wait for a miracle to happen and everything will work normally.

Also make sure that you are not using any idle/needless programs while playing, because PB can’t maybe reach your computer then. For example on some users it can be xfire, on others msnmessenger etc. Also using own computer as server for example on Skype(o.O) can cause problems.

Also it’s possible to contact your provider and make sure everything is right at their side.
Your own router should be fine if you haven’t made any changes to it and the normal internet usage works fine.

A short summary about PB; PB should always be updated to the latest version and all necessary traffic has accepted from the firewall. At this point you don’t have to worry about anti-virus software (Avira), it won’t cause any problems.

Surprise, surprise! At this tutorial I’m not going to tell anything by myself, but I’ll give you a website(I’m sorry its english only) includind text and videos. Well, at first I’ll tell you something:

Strafejumping is a technique to move faster than normally. Every player uses it. And yes, you can use it everywhere, on every single map, on every single mod(as far as it uses Q3 engine).

I borrow some text from wikipedia:

“The movements are usually as follows:

1. The player presses the forward key, preparing to make the first jump.
2. Still keeping the forward key pressed, the player jumps, adding either the move left or the move right key (which is where the strafe in strafe-jumping comes from). The strafe and jump keys must be pressed at the same time.
3. To gain maximum speed, the player must now move the mouse smoothly to around a 45 degree (i.e., turn) in the direction of the strafe, while still holding down the two aforementioned keys. This part is called airstrafing, which is responsible for increase in speed during the jump.
4. For successive strafejumps, the player immediately jumps again on landing, swapping the direction of strafe as well as mouse motion.

Done correctly, this will dramatically increase the player’s velocity with successive jumps.”

Note: Dont keep jump button pressed while airstrafing, but just click it once. If you keep pressing it while airstrafing, at worst case you will loose about 30% speed.

Still one thing before I’ll let you to learn via that website. This is important, but its not YET on that website. Though its propably incoming. So, the important thing is called Circle Jump(shortly CJ, you can see it performed at start of every jump on these videos on that website which I will give you soon):

“The circle jump start is the action performed by the player at the start of the strafe jumping, this gives a sudden burst of speed as opposed to gaining speed with regular strafe jumping.
The movements are as follows:

1. The player stands about 90 degrees from the direction he intends to move in.
2. The player then holds forward, the left or right strafe key (depending on which way you’re going), and turn to face 45 degrees the opposite way. (The player will have turned 135 degrees from his original position)
3. The player now continues into strafe jumping.”

Now step-by-step:

1. Go to http://www.trickjump.me/tutorials
2. At right side of web page click Fullbeat
3. Read it and watch video
4. When you have finished, check out the Halfbeat tutorial too
5. That’s it. Now you have learned to strafejump/trickjump. Now go to practise it(And I mean normal maps, not necessarily TJ(=trick jump) maps).
6. If you want to know more, check other tutorials too.

7.1 Finding the sensitivity
—————————
Example 1. Lower feels better
—————————–
I start with value 5.
10
5
2,5
I like more 2,5 so I cross out value 10 so there will be left values 2,5 and 5. I divide value 2,5 by 2 = 1,25. So now I have again three values.
5
2,5
1,25
Now I compare [...]

How to find the best sensitivity for yourself mouse?

7.1 Finding the sensitivity
—————————

Example 1. Lower feels better
—————————–

I start with value 5.

10
5
2,5

I like more 2,5 so I cross out value 10 so there will be left values 2,5 and 5. I divide value 2,5 by 2 = 1,25. So now I have again three values.

5
2,5
1,25

Now I compare values 5 and 1,25. Lower 1,25 feels better so I cross out value 5. Then I divide value 1,25 by 2 = 0,625.

2,5
1,25
0,625

Again I compare values 2,5 and 0,625. Higher 2,5 feels better so I cross out value 0,625.
NOTICE! Lower value didn’t felt better anymore, so I stop halfing. So now I take value 2,5 which I chosen and average value of that moment 1,25 and I calculate average value of those two values. I get nexts values:

2,5
1,875
1,25

Lower 1,25 feels better. So I cross out value 2,5. I calculate average value of 1,25 and 1,875 = 1,5625. I approximate values to three decimals, in this case to 1,563.

1,875
1,563
1,25

Now value 1,875 feels better. I cross out value 1,25 and then I calculate average value of those two values which were left:

1,875
1,719
1,563

Let’s say that I can’t say which one feels better, 1,875 or 1,563. So now I choose my sensitivity from that average value aka 1,719.

Example 2. Higher feels better
——————————

I start with value 5.

10
5
2,5

I like more 10. I cross out value 2,5 so there is left 10 and 5. I double value 10 = 20. So now I have again three values.

20
10
5

I compare values 20 and 5. Higher 10 feels better so I cross out value 5. I double again value 20 = 40.

40
20
10

Again I compare values 40 and 10. Value 40 feels still better so I cross out value 10 and double value 40 = 80.

80
40
20

I compare values 80 and 20 which lower value 20 feels better so I cross out value 80.
NOTICE! Higher value didn’t felt better anymore so I stop doubling. So now I take value 20 which I chosen and average value of that moment 40 and I calculate average value of those two values. I get nexts values:

40
30
20

I compare values 40 and 20 which value 20 feels better. So I cross out value 40. I calculate average value of 20 and 30 = 25.

30
25
20

Value 20 feels better so I cross out value 30 and again I calculate average value of those two values which were left:

25
22,5
20

Value 25 feels a little bit better so I cross out value 20 and I calculate average value of those two values which were left:

25
23,75
22,5

Value 25 feels a little bit better so I cross out value 22,5 and I calculate average value of those two values which were left:

25
24,375
23,75

Let’s say that I can’t say which one feels better, 25 or 23,75. So now I choose my sensitivity from that average value aka 24,375.

7.2 Fine tuning of sensitivity
——————————

So that value(1,719) which you got in example 1 will set as an average value. Also you multiply and divide it by 1,25. So you get next values:

2,149
1,719
1,375

Then again to test farthest values. Etc. Remember to multiply and divide by 1,25.

So that value(24,375) which you got in example 2 will set as an average value. Also you multiply and divide it by 1,25. So you get next values:

30,469
24,375
19,5

Then again to test farthest values. Etc. Remember to multiply and divide by 1,25.

In this way you will get very good sensitivity which fit to yourself.

At first
——–

Meaning of this short tutorial is to tell you basics to get good aim. Basically this is applied to all fps -games(notice, for example speed/tempo of the game still affect), but now I use Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory as an example game. Notice, maybe I don’t explain all things throughout, you can watch from google or find information somewhere else and via that way you can make sure that things are like I will tell.
Also notice that not every player will see difference on some points and for basic public gaming it is not necessary to tune up every single details. But of course it is nice to own also on basic public gaming :p
Some changes would make your gameplay better instantly, others make them even worse at first, but on longer timeline all the nexts changes will make your gaming better.

At first some -good to know- terms:

Negative acceleration:
I think this will be easiest to understand with example. So let’s suppose that you move your mouse slowly 10cm and your character will turn 180 degree in-game. Now you move your mouse again exactly the same distance but much faster. Your character will now turn less, for example only 90 degree.

Skipping:
There is two different skipping. First, your mouse’s sensor can’t read information as fast as you move your mouse so your mouse will skip aka throw cursor to random way/position. Second, cursor may skip pixels, aka jump over some pixels for example when you are using too low DPI compared to resolution which you are using.

Target is to get the game as steady, smooth and clear as possible so aiming will be easiest.

Now I will go shortly through the most vital sectors:

1.0 Central Processing Unit
—————————

Basically the faster computer you have, the better. So you can get high fps so you game will be very smooth. 125fps is really enought and about 70fps is already smooth(I have read somewhere that human eye can see 74fps in games(well, in reality human eye doesn’t get information by frames but by light :p )). You can also get higher fps by reducing graphical details.

2.0 Monitor
———–

Undying CRT vs TFT/LCD. Truth is that for fps gaming CRT is better. Reasons:

-You can set higher refresh rate(Control panel–>Monitor–>Settings–>Preferences–>Display–>Refresh rate). The game is much smoother with higher refresh rates (>100hz). On TFT/LCD panels maxium value is 75hz(60hz).

-TFT/LCD panels have response time and input lag. New panels can reach even 2ms response time but them still have input lag which is higher.

3.0 Mouse
———

I could write any amount about this but I try to get to with so little writing as possible.
First of all just think what type of player you are: highsens-, midsens- or lowsens player. Rought values in 360 degree turning could be:

Highsens: under 10cm (~4″)
Midsens: over 10cm (~4″) but under 40cm (~16″)
Lowsens: over 40cm (~16″)

(1″ = 2,54cm)

So it is sensible to tell sensitivity in the form of cm/360. You can find out what type of player you are when you measure how much you move your mouse that in-game characher turns 360 degree. Make sure you measure it right. Do that measure also several times.

That was made that you have some direction what mouse will be best for you. I mean optical mouse or laser mouse. Basically if you are lowsens gamer then optical mouse is your choise(because laser technology can’t handle yet fast movements making skipping and negative acceleration). But if you are highsens gamer then laser is maybe better for you nowdays. Though for example Deathadder and MX518 are still very good also for highsens gamer.
So choosing the mouse:

-Cord mouse (never wireless/cordless for gaming!)
-Technical information about mouse (especially important for lowsens gamers!)
-Ergonomic and design of mouse (how it fit to your hand)
-Lowsens/highsens gamer (optical or laser)

When mouse has chosen you can start optimize it. I go shortly through the most vital things:

3.1 Disabling mouse acceleration. First disable all acceleration from mouse drivers(if you have so called gaming mouse). Windows(at least XP) still have a little acceleration and disabling it needs a little operation. You can either download mouse accel fix.reg and use it or disable acceleration manually:

1. Press Start
2. Select Run
3. Type regedit and hit enter
4. Open the tree HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>select control panel–>mouse
5. Right clicking, modify the SmoothMouseXCurve and SmoothMouseYCurve hexidecimal values to the following:

(Remember to take backup copies from original values if you want later restore them)

SmoothMouseXCurve:
00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
00,a0,00,00,00,00,00,00
00,40,01,00,00,00,00,00
00,80,02,00,00,00,00,00
00,00,05,00,00,00,00,00

SmoothMouseYCurve:
00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
66,a6,02,00,00,00,00,00
cd,4c,05,00,00,00,00,00
a0,99,0a,00,00,00,00,00
38,33,15,00,00,00,00,00

6. Press OK after setting both(X and Y) values and you are done.

3.2 Speed of pointer. In control panel–>mouse–>settings of pointer set speed to half way aka 6/11. Do NOT cross Enhance Pointer Precision -box but leave it empty.

3.3 Overclocking the usb port. Windows has default 125hz(8ms) usb port but with overclocking it even up to 1000hz(1ms) you can get faster mouse reaction time and smoother mouse movement. At same time you reduce negative acceleration. Some mouses have ability to change this straight from drivers. If not, same thing is possible to do with some tool. One tool to that is hidusbf which you can get here: http://sweetlow.at.tut.by/download/hidusbf.zip. You can see the polling rate of usb port for example with mouserate checker -program. Target is to get as stable rate as possible(aka as high average rate as possible).
NOTICE! This operation could make problems for example with printer but I didn’t had any problems.
NOTICE! It’s useless to try to get high polling rate with basic mouses.

3.4 DPI(Dotch per inch, more closely Counts per inch). How much is enought? Is more always better?

(NOTICE! If you have basic mouse, probably you are not allowed to change your mouse’s DPI. Surely you can still check more closely from internet how it is at your mouse. Maybe with some drivers DPI changing would be possible.)

You can figure out necessary amount of DPI as follows:

Figure out what resolution you are playing with. Pick up the horizontal amount of pixels aka first value, for example I’m playing with 1280×1024 so my value is 1280. Multiply that value by four(4). By four, because screen shows 90 degree at time.

1280 x 4 = 5120

After that divide the total number of pixels by the total distance (in inches,) which is needed to turn your characher in-game 360 degree(remember, you have figured it out already). I need 50cm = ~19,685″. That’s how you get a rough idea of how much DPI is useful.

5120 / 19,685 = 260,0965… So about 260 DPI is useful for me.

Using more DPI than you just calculated for yourself doesn’t offer any benefit but mouse movement could feel smoother. Though on older mouses which uses 8-bit dimension, increasing DPI value increase crucially possibility to get negative acceleration. In turn using less DPI than you just calculated for yourself hinders your aiming because mouse will skip pixels.

4.0 Mousepad
————

This is mostly up to you what kind of mousepad you prefer to use (if you even use one). Some prefer the fabric surface when others prefer plastic for its “slippery” surface. It’s still preferred to use any mousepad so the mouse would have a smooth surface to move on. On a good surface the mouse will have also a better reading accurancy.
Especially on laser mouses, make sure the surface is compatible with the mouse. Some pad’s doesn’t fit for a certain mouse, but this doesn’t mean that the mouse won’t work on it.
You have to keep the pad clean, same goes for the mouse, i.e the cencor in laser mice might get dirty, making the mouse more inaccurate.

5.0 Increasing the Performance (Higher FPS)
——————————————-

In the beginning every player has a default cfg. Making the rigth setting changes/additions or making totally new cfg will give you higher fps and a clearer visibility. Next I’ll put some the most important settings which will help you to get higher fps, clearer visibility and some cmds help with aiming:

com_maxfps x (set x as the highest value which your computer can run stable. For better physics use the figure 43, 76, 125 or 333)

cg_runroll 0.000

cg_runpitch 0.000

cl_mouseAccel 0

m_pitch 0.015001 (defines the vertical mouse movement, default value is 0.022. So it makes it easier to keep the crosshair at head height)

m_filter 0

There are also more of useful commands that help you but those will give you a nice start.

Also it would be good to change crosshair to a dot(preferably as small as possible), it will make aiming more easier. Choose bright color that you can see it clearly in every situations.
(Notice that this maybe a bit personal question what is good crosshair for you)

6.0 Internet Settings
———————

Very short list of preferred setting to put in your cfg:

rate 25000 (lower for slow modem connections, i.e 15000 or even 5000)

snaps 20

cl_maxpackets 100 (lower for slower connections, i.e 60 or even 30)

cl_timenudge 0

Also older Operating Systems have problems with using the full speed of the faster connections. For this reason its profitable to change the TCP settings on older OS optimally for faster connection. A program called TCPOptimizer does the trick. All info what you need you can find here: http://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php

7.0 Finding the perfect sensitivity
———————————–

Goal: Crosshair follows enemy all the time, preferably at enemy’s head.

Half-goal: Crosshair will stay all the time on the one little solid point.

Well, now when everything else has put in order, still you must find the right sensitivity what to use when you are playing. You can affect mouse’s cursor/crosshair speed of movement by windows settings, changing DPI and in-game sensitivity. Only in-game sensitivity is sensible to change when finding right sensitivity for you.

NOTICE! WATCH EXAMPLES ABOUT NEXT SUBJECT FROM OTHER NOTEPAD!!!

7.1 Go to empty server and choose some map. At first set some value to sensitivity, for example game’s basic 5(command: /seta sensitivity 5). Choose one little solid point from map(about size of your crosshair supposing that you have a dot as crosshair), which is rather at height of head. Start moving left and right(strafing), forward and back, going circle etc. and at same time trying to keep crosshair on that little point. Write down that value(5). Now double value(–>10), write it down and try to keep crosshair on that little point. After that half the original value(–>2,5) write it down and againg try to keep crosshair on that little point.
Notice, if your crosshair is bouncing around and jitters, your sensitivity is probably too high. In turn, if you notice that crosshair is falling behind target when you change direction when strafing or you must picking mouse much, your sensitivity is probably too slow.
Now when you have tried three different values, cross out EITHER highest OR lowest sensitivity, depending on which one felt worse. In this way you eliminate the worst sensitivity, leaving you with the best two sensitivities.

If you kept the higher sens, double it again, but if you kept the lower sens, divide it by two. REPEAT THIS UNTIL YOU GET A WORSE FOR THE NEW SENS. Now you take sens which you chosen and average sens of that moment and then you calculate average sens of those two sens. Then again test those two farthest sens and cross out worse sens, take average sens from two left sens and then again test two farthest sens etc.

Finally when you can’t for the life of you tell which of the two sensitivities are worse, you can watch average sens of that moment and see that it’s your new sensitivity. Write this value down and play some days with it.

Do this ‘finding the sens’ -thing a couple of times in different days and use enought time to it. Results should be very close that sensitivity which you get in first time.

7.2 After some days you can start fine tuning of your sensitivity. Set to average sens that sens which you got before. Now instead multiply or divide by two, multiply and divide by 1,25 because you have already found pretty good sensitivity for you, so there is barely big changes. Otherwise operate exactly as in chapter 7.1.

7.3 Now when you have found good sensitivity for yourself, it’s time to start practise with it in real situations. There is two way to do it. Both are recommended to use:

1. You play on public servers.
2. You train with friend on empty server (or alone like in ‘finding sensitivity’ -chapter)

On point 1 is barely any unclear situations. On point 2 train like this: first both don’t shoot, just move and try to keep crosshair on each other. When you will get bored, you can start also shooting, getting/simulating different situations like showing up behind corner etc. whatever you can imagine.

Also notice that when time pass, mouse’s paws wear out causing more friction. Therefore it could be good to change paws every now and then(for example every 6 moths or every 12 months) or use specific tape.

In the end
———-

Hopefully you got even something helpfull from this short tutorial. I apologize that some things are explained a bit superciliously or didn’t explained at all. Maybe I will make a larger and better tutorial in future, or then not. I don’t know.

Patience, hard training and humbleness are for good in everything.

What is configuration(or config file or cfg file) file?
——————————————————-
It’s a file that contains every in-game settings. It’s located in your etmain folder(etmain folder is located in folder where you installed your W:ET, for example C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein Enemy Territory). Its named as etconfig.cfg(so its suffix is .cfg). You can open it for example with Wordpad and edit it just like any other text file.

What are these in-game settings that it contains?
————————————————-
For example crosshair color, movement buttons, internet connection settings, in-game name, graphical settings, sound settings etc. Actually everything thats related to in game settings.

But I can change those settings via in-game Options menu too.
————————————————————-
Yes you can change some things via Options menu too, but not all of them. (Here I want to say that it makes no difference if you change settings via Options menu or edit these in cfg file, because if you change settings via Options manu, it saves these changes to config file. Though Options menu has very limited possibilities to edit settings)

Ok, I opened it but its very messy.
———————————–
Yes its pretty messy looking, so its better to make a totally new cfg than starting to edit that mess.

But if I make new cfg, what happens to this cfg? And what if I forget something that was in this original cfg but not in my new cfg?
———————-
When you make your new cfg, you can leave the original cfg in the etmain folder. Don’t worry about it. Its just like resting there and waiting if you want to use it later.
And if your new cfg does not have something what original had, dont be scared because then ET automatically uses the default setting on that missing thing.

Thing, thing and thing. What are these “things” that you are talking about?
————————————————————————–
Those things are cvars, console variables, things that you can change. Or they can also be commands, things that you can also put to your cfg file.

The console? (Also look pictures console1.png and console2.png)
————
I borrow some text: “To open the console, press whatever key you have bound to “toggleConsole”. This will usually be the key under ESCape, which changes depending on keyboard layout but usually is the ` or ~ key. When using the console, everything should be prepended with “/” for whatever reason. Otherwise it will send what you type in global chat.”

Ok so I can have many cfgs in my etmain folder at same time. But how the game knows what cfg to use?
—————————————————————————————————–
ET’s config loading system is very strange, because it doesn’t have any master cfg file, but it actually has 4 different cfg files in different places that it checks when you are starting to play. But don’t worry, its very simple for you to decide what cfg you want to use. All you need to do is execute the cfg what you want to use. To do that, type /exec configname.cfg in console(that configname is the name of the config what you want to use). Also that config must be in etmain folder.

So let’s do a cfg for me! Oh wait, how I know what cvars and commands even exist?
———————————————————————————
I’ll give you two very nice websites that you can use to help you to make your cfg. They contain cvars and commands that ET uses. And the best thing is, there are explanations what every cvar or command does! Have fun reading and learning.
Website1: http://www.antman.info/wolf/cvar/
Website2: http://www.antman.info/wolf/cvar/cmdcvarlist.html

Ooohh there is so much cvars and cmds, do I need them all?
———————————————————-
No you don’t. Just choose the ones that you want to change or you feel like to put it to cfg file. Also for start its a nice idea to pick up some things from your default etconfig.cfg if you want to.

Mhh ok but can you tell me step by step how to create config properly?
———————————————————————-
Yep, let’s do a very very simple cfg.
1. Make a new .txt file.(Mouse right click–>New–>txt file)
2. Put next cvar there: seta cg_fov “120″ (picture makingcfg1.png)
3. Save it: File–>Save as–>test.cfg (picture makingcfg2.png)
4. Make sure that test.cfg file is in etmain folder now
5. Start ET and join server (picture defaultcfg.png)
6. Execute that cfg by doing /exec test.cfg in console
7. Now your fov(field of view) should change (picture fovchangedcfg.png)
8. If nothing happens and you see “couldn’t exec test.cfg” in the console, make sure that your cfg is test.cfg and not test.cfg.txt (so suffix must be .cfg). Also make sure that your config is in etmain folder.

Nice, but why seta, I’v heard that set does the same thing.
———————————————————–
Difference between set and seta is that seta saves the change and set doesn’t. So in cfg file it doesn’t really matter, because you usually always load the cfg again when you join server, but if you change cvars via console, then it matters.

Ok, so now I’m ready to make my own cfg file!
———————————————
Yep, and make it unique, its your cfg! It is nice to put all cvars and commands in order, so its cool looking and its easy to find cvars and commands if you want to change them or just check them. (picture wellorganizedcfg.png)

What are those two / -marks, and after those there is normal writing?
———————————————————————
// means that when ET loads that config, it ignores everything on that line after two / -marks. So you can write whatever you want there, for example some notes.

Anything else what I should know now?
————————————-
1. Again I borrow some text: “Binding is a combination of different variables and their values, keyboard key, and punctuation marks. They are good to set some action or actions on a single keyboard key, so no need to use lots of keys to do something more complex.”

How to use binds: /bind [key] “[command]”

For example all movement buttons are binded.
So if you want to bind many actions to one key, you must use ; -mark between different commands(as you can see on picture somebinds.png).

2. vid_restart is a console command that is used to restart the renderer, so changes to video settings take effect. snd_restart restarts sound settings. cvar_restart deletes all custom cvars and reset all et-based on its default.

3. Most cvars have range where values can be set. For example for cg_fov available values are from 90 to 120. If value is out of range, PunkBuster kicks player. Or other values(out of range) can be cheat protected or prevented by server cfg.

4. There is also many ready configs on internet made by another players. You can use them or edit those configs a bit and use these then. Or ofc you can make your own cfg totally by yourself…

Nice to know.
————-
Yup, also if you want to know more about making configs or scripting in ET, there is a lot info available on internet. This was just basic infos about cfg, but actually this is all what you need. For example if you want to make some cool(or irritating) ASCII smiles what you can spam on server or you want to make different settings for every map(autoexecuting), just search it on the almighty interweb.
